I.K.A. - NATIONAL BLACK BELT CHAMPIONSHIPS    Register here

At the September 14, 2009 meeting of the Isshinryu Karate-Do Association board members, it was decided to donate 50% of

the profit from the April 10th I.K.A. (Mt. Juliet, TN) Isshinryu

Black Belt Tournament to the Woody Fund. There are about

15 separate Isshinryu organizations. If each organization will send 10 or more adult Black Belts, we will have enough to

make a nice donation. I.K.A. won the Bartusevics Tonfas -

they will be awarded to the association that sends

the largest contingent (not including I.K.A.).

Info and updates on the tournament will be posted here,

on the IKA-Isshinryu.com website. For more info, contact:

Dr. Bill Pogue, I.K.A. Director, 318-918-9671.

I.K.A. - ISSHINRYU KARATE-DO ASSOCIATION

presents the

I.K.A. ISSHINRYU

NATIONAL BLACK BELT

CHAMPIONSHIPS

Open to All Isshinryu Black Belts 17 years and older

 Saturday, April 10, 2010

West Wilson Middle School

Mt. Juliet (Nashville), Tennessee

This is the first I.K.A. Tournament

open to all Isshinryu Black Belts.

We encourage all Isshinryu

Organizations to send a team.

We may use round-robin kumite and double performances (kata and weapons kata competition). We ask each organization to send at least

TWO competitors per division.

Only ONE synchronized Kata Team per school (must have 3+ members). We will supply a WUKO-style referee video on this website and a clinic on Friday evening, April 9, 2010, 5:00-7:00pm for those who wish to referee kumite. All kumite referees must attend the seminar and be pre-registered.

I.K.A. Isshinryu is in the process of being recognized by WUKO and Isshinryu Katas will be on the list of WUKO- sanctioned disciplines. If you are not familiar with WUKO standards, search YouTube, WUKO Kumite, or WUKO Kata to get a preview.

It makes for a very professional event.

Since this is an event aimed at your elite

competitors, Black Belt Isshinryu adults only,

it is truly a National Black Belt Championship.

We have decided to relax the dress codes

so there will be no barrier for participants.

Any color of gi will be  allowed.

All center judges for kumite may wear

a gi or tan slacks and white shirts

Age requirements will be strictly observed.

I.K.A. does not recognize 4th Dans under age 28,

or 6th Dans under age 38 - NO exceptions.

I.K.A. TOURNAMENT RULES

This yearly tournament is open to all adult Isshinryu

Black Belts, 17 years of age and older. The purpose

of this tournament is to provide a very clean-cut and professional level tournament to those who are

usually "working" all day at tournaments and/or are

past the usual age and/or rank for competition.

We use modified W.U.K.O./W.K.F refereeing

procedures to provide a structured event.

These are the primary rules that

will move us toward these goals:

1) All referees must be familiarized with W.K.F. rules via our website video and a brief review seminar before the tournament.

2) All referees must be 4th Dan or higher and, when possible, higher ranked than the competitors.

3) Referees may compete in appropriate rank divisions and/or team kata and/or demonstrations.

4) Referees must notify the tournament director prior to the tournament for ring assignments.

5) Competition may be done double elimination in kumite, kata, and weapons kata. Elimination will be separated from finals by a short break to allow for eating and changes of clothing if necessary. Finals will include kumite matches for all divisions plus the demonstration, breaking, and team kata divisions. Grand Champion will be between the winners of 1 Dan and 2-3 Dan; Masters 4-5 and 6-8 Dan. Grand Champion kata and weapons will be between the winners of 1 Dan male and female, 2-3 Dan male and female. Masters Grand Championship will be between the winners of 4-5 Dan male and female and 6-8 Dan male and female.

Team kata - 3 or more members any rank.

Breaking - any rank.

Demonstration - any rank demo.

Demo competitors will vote on each others performance.

All 9th and l0th Dans are invited to demonstrate and/or serve as head referees.

Note: no persons shall be allowed on the gym floor except registered competitors, registered referees, and one coach per association, time keepers, score keepers and medical personnel. At no time will spectators, parents, or extraneous "coaches" be allowed on the floor.

It is strongly encouraged that each association or independent school arrive with a school flag or banner, similar to Mr. Laney's group flag at the I.H.O.F. - very classy indeed and a staple at large, international tournaments.

We will open the tournament with the national anthem and a non-denominational prayer and all who are able will be required to stand.

Children are allowed, loved, cherished and encouraged to sit politely during adult events-which this is.

At no time shall anyone other than a coach or registered competitor be allowed to register a complaint concerning judging or other tournament business. Example: your mother cannot shout at a l0th Dan- "You cheated my baby!"

If we get enough pre-registrations we will possibly offer a full contact Bogu-gear (koshiki) division for 1-5 Dan. This is in honor of Master Shimabuku , an innovator in the use of Bogu for real life fighting.

* BLACK BELT CHAMPIONSHIP UPDATES *

REGISTRATION DEADLINE EXTENDED

TO APRIL 1, 2010

I.K.A. is proud to announce that Grand Master Harold Mitchum, 10th Dan and the highest ranked Isshinryu Master alive will be

in attendance at this event. Master John Bartusevics, 8th Dan and a first generation Shimabuku student will also attend. Master Bartusevics who is donating his tonfas for the Woody Fund will be on hand to personally sign the tonfas that are to be awarded to the group with the greatest number of competitors.
